A mathematics degree from Morris gives students the foundation to contribute to our community and society, either as mathematicians or in one of the many careers available to our graduates.

Whether the challenge is to create an aerodynamically efficient car to save fuel, analyze polling statistics in a tight political contest, or understand the patterns of nature, mathematics is crucial. The list of practical applications for mathematics is almost endless, and extends from “moneyball” to the revolutionary discoveries in particle physics taking place at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Along with the practical side, there is an innate beauty in mathematics that helps us appreciate the natural world more deeply. The structure of a pine cone is succinctly expressed by a simple numerical progression, the Fibonacci sequence; fractals can define the shape of a shoreline or the structure of a mountain range.

Mathematics is an important component of the liberal arts core. It helps build the analytical and critical thinking skills vital to a well-rounded education, skills that are also highly attractive in a demanding job marketplace in constant change.

Mathematics at Morris

The Mathematics Discipline at Morris has an outstanding faculty with broad expertise. All courses in the department curriculum are taught by experienced, full-time faculty.

The discipline serves students who:

  • Major or minor in mathematics
  • Seek secondary mathematics teaching licensure
  • Major or minor in programs that require a mathematical background
  • Want to expand their knowledge of mathematics as a part of the general education requirement

The curriculum is designed to help students develop expertise in mathematical techniques and methods, sharpen the students' mathematical and abstract reasoning intuition, and to encourage and stimulate the type of independent thinking required for research beyond the confines of the textbook.

These capabilities are flexible and can help students succeed in any field, or continue on to advanced graduate study.
