Photography students are encouraged to combine media, experiment with traditional approaches, and explore alternative methods in the production of images. Many students expand a concentration in black and white photography with interests in:
The University of Minnesota, Morris provides enrolled students with all-day access to a facility featuring several Besseler enlargers and multiple workstations. Classes provide one-on-one and group critiques of student work as well as discussion of the work of established artists.
By studying photography, students can:
- Develop a sense of the use of the medium as a means to expand their own personal vision;
- Gain a better understanding of composition;
- Learn about presentation styles and techniques, including sequential book form, collage, montage, and traditional matting and framing;
- Discover the potential of the medium to express views and ideas.

Service Learning initiatives provide photography students with unique off-campus learning experiences.
Since 2003, students have been developing a body of photography and writing in support of our noted local foods program.
Photography students work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from across the campus assisting with projects ranging from production of the campus website to providing documentation for regional initiatives developed by the Center for Small Towns.
Student photography has been exhibited at regional venues including the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance, government buildings, Pomme de Terre Co-Op, Common Cup Coffeehouse and Java River.
