Why Mathematics?

A mathematics degree from Morris gives students the foundation to contribute to our community and society, either as mathematicians or in one of the many careers available to our graduates.


The mathematics major at Morris starts with a solid grounding in mathematical principles. These foundations create a framework for whatever direction the student chooses as a focus. Students can then branch out and explore areas of mathematics that match their interest or that apply to their desired field. The curriculum also emphasizes the role mathematics plays in the development of civilization and in our society.


Students can fulfill the minor in mathematics at Morris with these three core courses:

  • Calculus 1
  • Calculus 2
  • Linear Algebra

Along with 12 more mathematics credits (with the option to substitute Stat 2601 or Stat 2611 for four of those credits).

Teaching Licensure

For teaching licensure in mathematics, students complete a mathematics major with Geometry, Discrete Mathematics and the History of Mathematics as part of the curriculum. In addition, students fulfill the professional education program, which will include student teaching.

Because of the wide scope of the specialized knowledge and research of the faculty, the Mathematics discipline offers a diverse range of advanced courses. Pure mathematics courses include:

  • Abstract Algebra
  • Combinatorics
  • Differential Geometry
  • Number Theory
  • Real and Complex Analysis
  • Topology

The following classes in applied mathematics are also offered on a regular basis:

  • Partial Differential Equations
  • Mathematical Modeling
  • Optimization and Operations Research
  • Applications of Graph Theory
  • Applied Numerical Analysis

Students are also required to take a course with significant mathematical applications outside the mathematics discipline. This course must be approved by the math faculty.
