Nearly all secondary education students pursue scholarly pursuits within their majors.
Many complete research experiences through Morris Academic Partners (MAP) or Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) projects, present at the Undergraduate Research Symposium, or assist professors with fieldwork.
In addition, a large number of secondary education students serve as teaching assistants for courses/professors in their majors, work in the Writing Center, or tutor for the Office of Academic Success. Many students volunteer in organizations and activities such as Big Friend/Little Friend, TREC, EMSP, or Super Saturday Science.
Global Practicum, the English Language Teaching Assistant Program, allows students fluent in spoken English to help people in other countries learn English. While experiencing another culture and community, participants complete UMM course requirements and share their culture and language with others.
EMSP, the campus chapter of the Education Minnesota Student Program, helps students develop preprofessional skills. Members attend professional meetings and conferences, and meet bi-monthly to discuss education issues, complete volunteer service projects, hear from professionals in the field, and have fun with other teacher candidates.
MAP, a Morris Academic Partnership, provides academically talented third-year students opportunities to assist faculty with projects related to research and/or teaching. Students earn a stipend while developing skills that enhance intellectual competence and increase interest in graduate or professional study.
Study Abroad programs allow students to gain language, reasoning, and interpersonal skills, and a global perspective that will serve them throughout their lives and careers. Credits earned apply to general education and/or major requirements.
The Honors Program is an interdisciplinary curriculum for eligible students with classes taught by faculty from across the campus. Students who complete the program graduate “with Honors” on their degree.
TREC, Tutoring, Reading, Enabling Children, is a collaborative program between UMM and regional communities. Volunteers support literacy development and gain teaching experience in individual and small group settings.
